Avoiding the Holiday Flu Blues

The semester is winding down and you're pulling all nighters in a feverish succession while as you work away at your online nursing degree. Essays, projects, presentations, and studying for final exams have you downing the coffee like it's champagne. You're sucking back the Red Bull 24/7, and eating whatever scraps you have left in your cupboards because you've been to busy to go grocery shopping. Not only are you stumbling around campus looking like the crypt keeper, you are guaranteeing yourself a generous dose of any number of cold & flu strains for the holiday season. It's time for a little preemptive planning to ensure you're not a walking petri dish. Here are a few tips to help keep you in fine form through this stressful time:

1) Pass the garlic please...and the mouthwash. This is not a myth, garlic is a natural blood antioxidant, antiviral and one of natures greatest antibacterials. If you're not a fan of smelling like a plate of bolognese all the time, pick up some garlic pills from your local pharmacy.

2) GET A FLU SHOT! C'mon, how many times do we have to beg you to get the poke? Flu shots have been proven to reduce your risk of contracting common strains of the flu by over 70%. Plus, if you get the flu, you can forget about hugs and kisses with the 'ol grandparents. The flu is deadly to the elderly and small children.

3) MOVE YOUR BUTT! Seriously. Picking up the phone to order pizza does not an exercise regime make. You should be getting a MINIMUM of 60 minutes of high intensity exercise a day. Try an Insanity workout to get the heart pumping. This will not only have you looking fabulous, it will help you hit the hay much easier, and help boost your body's immune system so it's able to fight off dangerous bacterial and viral infections.

4) Sleeping Beauty. Quit rolling your eyes. Do you honestly think that staying up 'til all hours of the morning is going to guarantee you a 4.0 GPA? WRONG! The best students make sure to not to starve their bodies of the rest it so desperately needs. Too much on your mind? Try a natural treatment like Valerian root. It's proven sedative effects, help you to not only slip into a peaceful slumber, but you won't wake up feeling super groggy. You'll wake up feeling refreshed, and ready for another crack at the books.

5) Don't procrastinate..HYDRATE! You're mama's been telling you this for years! And guess what, she was right! Coffee, Red Bull, Cola's and Juices don't count, they're just extra calories you don't need, and they actually dehydrate you! We're talking plain old H20, the liquid gold that pours from your tap (or your brita filter).

You don't have to be a psychology major to know how to get through a semester without catching the Ebola virus, but sometimes we need to be reminded how to take care of ourselves. So remember, wash your hands at every opportunity, follow these tips above, and you'll be laughing your way through the holiday season.
